SUDDEN DEAFNESS

It's another beautiful Wednesday and I hope that you are doing just fine, Dear Reader.

"Are you deaf?"

"Some have ears but cannot hear."

.

.

.

I'm sure that you've all uttered such statements, or had such statements uttered to you at one point or the other, possibly because somehow, your eardrums decided that they won't just listen to what someone has been trying to tell you repeatedly. I've experienced that countless times, and sometimes I feel ashamed to even ask what the person was trying to say because he/she might label me a deaf girl๐Ÿ˜….

Dear Reader, I recently found an ear condition called "Sudden Deafness". Its medical name is "Sudden Sensorineural (Inner Ear) Hearing Loss", and it is an unexplained, rapid loss of hearing either all at once or over a few days. This happens when something goes wrong with the sensory organs of the inner ear, and it often affects just one ear.

A lot of times, there is no specific identifiable cause as a lot of disorders affecting the ear can cause this condition, but some of the possible causes include; infections, head trauma, exposure to certain drugs, disorders of the inner ear, and autoimmune disorders.

You all will agree with me that this condition can seem false and unreal. How can someone who was hearing perfectly well just sleep and wake up as a deaf person? It doesn't add up in my brain, and I think in yours too, but in the medical line they say "Never say never".

While finding out more about this disease, a Bible verse came to my mind. Rev. 3:22 "He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the Churches" ESV.

Did the "churches" mentioned in this verse suddenly become deaf? Or did they not have ears at all? I realized that the same statement was repeated three times in that chapter. Was it for emphasis or was it a warning? Whatever the case may be, the text cautions us to listen to the leading and guiding voice of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God.

The seven churches all had a letter and they were all warned to take heed of what they needed to correct in their walk with God. Before the warning, each church apart from the church in Laodicea was praised for what they had done or were doing well. It means that there was a period when they were listening just fine before things took a new dimension and they became deaf suddenly.

Depending on the cause of sudden deafness, there is a treatment. The use of corticosteroids, antibiotics, and sometimes hearing aids. So also abiding in Christ and listening to/applying what the Word says is beneficial to our spiritual health.

Dear Reader, I hope that you ensure that your ears do not become deaf suddenly as a result of underlying ear problems. Always ensure that you check the conditions of your ear regularly, and make sure that you do not become deaf.

I long to read your comments and thoughts, as you read through this post. Have a blessed evening!

  1. I very recently had an ear infection that left me having very little hearing in my right ear. Thankfully, it has cured and I'm back to full hearing capacity but I can understand how terrifying it is to suddenly be unable to hear! This makes me even more cautious because loss of spiritual hearing may not be as easy to detect. Thank you so much Ma'am for this reminder to continually check my spiritual antenna.
    God bless you.

    1. Exactly. Loss of spiritual hearing is so subtle that you might not realize it until you're far gone. I pray we never get to that point.
      Thank you for reading.

  2. Spiritual deafness is more dangerous than physical deafness. But may God protect us from both ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ

I'm happy to know that you have two perspectives from the blog. Maybe a third read will still give another insight. Don't you think?
