DRY SENSATION

The weather has been quite hot and dry in most places this period. I know that so many people like myself have been quite dehydrated and easily thirsty due to the weather change. Even after taking water sometimes, I still have this dry sensation and I always want more water!

The body has some mechanisms it uses to maintain homeostasis whenever we are thirsty or dehydrated. These are actions the body takes to ensure that a constant internal environment is maintained even when there is less water due to the hot and dry weather.

Whenever the body has lesser fluid or a higher concentration of certain osmolites, we tend to become thirsty. The hypothalamus plays a vital role in the regulation of thirst. One thing the hypothalamus does is increase the synthesis of antidiuretic hormone(ADH) called vasopressin, which is secreted by the pituitary gland and travels to the kidneys to perform its function. In the kidney, it causes water to be reabsorbed from the urine, thus reducing urine flow and conserving water in the body until more fluids are consumed.

The hypothalamus plays other functions that will not be mentioned today just to ensure that we do not immediately collapse when we are thirsty.

As simple as the process of being "thirsty" might seem, the body plays a lot of regulatory functions to sustain itself depending on when it can get water or anything liquid to quench the thirst. The whole process reminded me of the passage from our last post: "For he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things." Psalm 107:9 NIV

Could it be that God alters the normal physiological process to satisfy our thirst? Or does He follow the process but attend to us depending on the severity of our thirst? Whatever the response He chooses, we have to know that God only satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry. That means the requirement he needs to attend to us is thirst and hunger.

Dear Reader, the physical body easily notifies us whenever we are thirsty, but it is very easy to miss out when the thirst is otherwise. If you have read to this point, take a break and try to check your spiritual appetite. If any action is required, run to the one who can satisfy your thirst and fill your hunger.

Even as we hope that the rains begin very soon, I hope that you constantly check your appetite both physically and otherwise. I'm rooting for you and your total health and well-being.
