SINGLE EYES

Dear reader, Happy Wednesday!

It's been a while, how have you been? I hope that life has been treating you well.

I saw an eye condition called "Keratoconus" while reading about eye diseases. It is an eye condition which affects the cornea. It occurs when the cornea gradually changes from its original dome shape to a distorted cone shape. This thins the cornea and affects the eye's ability to focus light, resulting in distorted or blurred vision. The eye also becomes sensitive to light and glare, sometimes making it difficult for the sufferer to drive at night.

The exact cause of this condition is not known, but it is believed to be genetic, or caused by environmental/allergic conditions. The solution? The use of eyeglasses, hard contact lenses, or surgery can be used to treat Keratoconus, depending on its level of progression.

You all will agree with me that the eyes are very crucial, and any discomfort in the eye can affect almost the entire body. If you've ever experienced the popular "conjunctivitis" popularly known in this part of the world as "Apollo", you'll attest to how painful and discomforting it can be. Not to mention the discharge and tearing that accompanies the pain, and the fact that people might even tease you about it sometimes.

But then, let us hear what the Bible says regarding the eye. The Bible says "The light of the body is the eye, if therefore thy eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that be in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!" (Matthew 6:22-23 KJV). In literal terms, it means that we see light only through the eyes, and we can only know that there is darkness because of the eyes.

What Jesus means from that passage is that our eyes are the entrance to our hearts and minds and if we see well, we guard our hearts and perceive the right things, but if we don't, we pollute and corrupt our minds, and he stresses how great that darkness will be. In essence, what you see has such great influence on your mind and on the light that you carry. Just like Keratoconus and other eye disorders affect the physical eye's ability to see clearly, so also sin does to our spiritual eyes. It blurs our spiritual eyes and causes us to not see and perceive things the way God wants us to. Sadly, a lot of us are careless about our spiritual eyes and it's well being.

Our spiritual eyes give light to our minds, our hearts, and even our bodies. If you then want your whole body to be full of light, watch what you see with your eyes. Learn to focus your eyes more on God and less on sin, lest your body be full of thick darkness.

I can't promise that it's going to be easy, and neither can you 'unsee' all the things you've seen before. But I know that through God's help, you can be intentional about what you see from henceforth. It's a journey, and we have to get to the finish line, God helping us.

May our eyes be single even as we continue today and always. Have a blessed day🌹

PS: I specially dedicate this post to my friend, Alex Accanny for getting me a journal and for the heart warming note he scribbled in it. Thank you, Alex.
