ROYAL DISEASE
For generations, a mysterious affliction coursed through the veins of European royalty—a hidden condition that influenced the fates of empires, altered the course of history, and marked the lives of kings, queens, and heirs. This condition was a carefully guarded secret, spoken of only behind palace walls, while those affected lived with a constant, unseen threat.
This force was unique: it struck those with power, not in the form of an external enemy or a political rival, but as a silent, internal foe. This affliction, now known as hemophilia, turned minor injuries into life-threatening events, haunting royal bloodlines and changing history itself.
But what is hemophilia, and why did it so often appear within Europe’s royal families?
Hemophilia is a genetic blood disorder that prevents blood from clotting properly. An activity necessary to stop bleeding. While many illnesses affect people indiscriminately, hemophilia notably appeared within European royalty, particularly among the descendants of Queen Victoria. For these families, it was a curse—unpredictable, dangerous, and always lurking.
This disorder stems from the absence of certain clotting factors, namely Factor VIII or Factor IX. Without these proteins, the blood cannot form clots to stop bleeding. This means that even the smallest injury can lead to prolonged bleeding. Worse, spontaneous internal bleeding can occur, particularly in the joints and muscles, causing severe pain, long-term damage, and sometimes death.
For someone with hemophilia, daily life is a delicate balance. A minor fall or bump can turn into a medical emergency. For royals, the stakes were even higher, as a sickly or incapacitated heir was not only a personal tragedy but a potential national crisis. Hemophilia disproportionately affects males due to its genetic basis on the X chromosome. Females, with two X chromosomes, are often carriers without symptoms, while males, who have only one X chromosome, experience the full effects of the disorder.
For royal families, hemophilia had severe implications. Weakness or frailty was not just a personal challenge; it posed a threat to the stability of the kingdom. Heirs with hemophilia were shielded from public scrutiny, and their condition was often kept secret.
Fortunately, modern medicine has come a long way in treating hemophilia. Today, the most common treatment is “clotting factor replacement therapy,” which involves injecting the missing clotting factor to prevent or control bleeding episodes. Although life-changing, this treatment requires frequent administration, sometimes multiple times a week, and can lead to complications, such as the development of antibodies that reduce its effectiveness.
The whole hemophilia issue brought to mind the story of the woman with the issue of the blood from the Bible, focusing on the account of Mark.
This woman was said to have suffered much under many physicians as a result of her "constant bleeding".
Could it be that this woman suffered from hemophilia? Research shows that the disease is more pronounced in males. Whatever the case, she had suffered for twelve years without a cure.
Mark 5:29 "Instantly her flow of blood ceased, and she sensed in her body that she was cured of her affliction" (Holman Christian Standard Bible)
The Bible passage above shows that after the woman touched the hem of the garment of Jesus, the flow of blood or affliction ceased "instantly".
This implies that Jesus's garment contained modern and traditional medicine, clotting factor replacement therapy, and every other cure that the woman needed.
Perhaps you're from a royal family suffering from the royal disease, or maybe you're not but you suffer from a disease similar to this, we just might have found the permanent cure to it, the "instant" cure at that, and more so, he's free.
